I agree with Steven.  I've been to the Lucky Strike several times.  The people there are great and helpful, but if you want bang-for-the-buck I believe the Cotton Patch has them beat.

Also, Badnessdc, I look at our hobby as just that; a hobby.  We ain't likely to get rich doing it but... how many other hobbies can you actually get a return on your investment?  Golf? No.  Sink $1000 into clubs, bags, balls and green fees and what do you get? Some fun.  Fishing? Sink $1000 into rods, reels, bait and licenses and what do you got?  Hands that smell like fish, some fun, and a catfish supper. Yes, in prospecting you sink the money in, but some reward with actual cash value comes back besides the fun, and your hands aren't near as smelly.

I have been to Lucky Strike, Thermal City and Heather Grove (Which is now closed) and my HONEST opinion is that you will do better at Cotton Patch than anywhere else. Their material is higher but the gold is much better. The only thing I've found at the other places is some flake and flower gold. The patch has NUGGETS. You might not find them on every trip but you will find them. Also, The Patch is the ONLY place you have a chance to find SPECIMENS. I have about a hundred or so specimens and they ALL came from The Patch. Just remember that prospecting is like fishing....some days you catch a big one and some days you don't.....only difference is...you don't through the small ones back when prospecting.

Happy hunting,
Steven Lynch

I have been to Lucky Strike in Marion, NC twice, found some gold - but cannot justify any more trips from Huntersville for the amount that we carefully highbanked and cleaned at home with a micro-sluice and blue bowl.  Needless to say that I have about $1000 already invested in equipment.

There you can buy about a 5 yard front loader full of creek placer material for $35.00 and if you needed to, rent a highbanker for another $30.00 - gas included.  This load will take about a whole day to run when being careful with several cleanups in between with two people.

So, my point... at the end of the day about $100 is spent with food, travel gas, highbanker rental and material - and you recover about less than $100 in placer gold.  Should my expectations with Cotton Patch dirt be any better OR would I be better off spending $100 every other week on scratch-off lottery tickets?

I know that I am setting up myself for biased answers - but try to be honest.  Maybe soon my gold days are going to be cut short and my stuff put on Ebay if I cannot recover atleast my investment.  Tongue
